Dana Gioia and Michael Palma's New Italian Poets (Story Line, 1991) provided an excellent selective anthology of ten influential poets. Now Ridinger (a translator and English teacher in Italy) and Renello (editor of an Italian literary life magazine) have compiled a far more comprehensive, bilingual collection of 34 poets writing since 1950. They have chosen poems by major names such as Pier Paolo Pasolini and Edoardo Sanguinetti as well as by a number of lesser-known "experimental" poets not often anthologized. (Only two poets?Milo De Angelis and Valerie Magrelli?are included in both collections.) A general introduction gives a good overview of the three "generations" of poets represented (those born before 1935, those born between 1935 and 1945, and those born after 1945), and brief biocritical essays introduce the work of each poet. Ridinger's translations are attentive to individual poetic voices. In all, this is a major step toward bringing these important and inventive voices to American readers in a single volume.
